Mumbai:

The Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST), the civil transport company in Mumbai, announced on Wednesday that it would launch a dedicated bus service for women from 6 November.

The service will start on 70 routes in the metropolis with a fleet of 100 buses, it said in a release.

Of 70 routes, 10 will be “specially for ladies”, which means that only female passengers on the buses can be dedicated to this service.

The remaining 60 routes will be “ladies first”, with female passengers being given priority at the first bus stop.

Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray of Maharashtra had instructed to start a “ladies special” and “ladies first” service to reduce the commuting of female passengers in the metropolis, BEST said.

As many as 90 percent of these routes will have air-conditioned buses.

BEST previously operated some services only for women, but they were stopped after a recent rationalization of the route, the release said.

The company has a fleet of more than 4,000 buses. For the pandemic, almost 35 lakh passengers travel every day by BEST buses.
